アフガニスタンをタリバンが占拠し女子は教育も受けられなくなった頃からやがてニューヨークの９１１の仕返し攻撃が始まるまでの時間が書かれている。
髪を切り、少年の姿で餓え、危険と戦う少女ショーツィア。自分の夢は海を渡りフランスのラベンダー畑に行くこと。でも現実は想像以上に過酷だった。泥壁に囲まれたパキスタンの難民キャンプを出て働きやっとの事で貯めたお金を警察に取り上げられどん底に落ちたとき、留置所に迎えに来てくれたアメリカ人家庭での夢のような生活。留守宅に物乞いを入れたことにより大混乱に。最後は難民キャンプへ舞い戻る。最後に身の危険を犯してもアフガンの被災者を治療に行く部隊へ加わろうとする姿が感動だ。
